Azealia Banks has defended skin bleaching in an extraordinary online video.
The outspoken rapper, who has raged at the likes of Iggy Azalea for ‘cultural appropriation’ and even Beyoncé for her portrayal of black women in her visual film for her latest album, Lemonade, has claimed that she’s started to bleach her skin.
In a 21-minute video for Facebook Live, Azealia compared her skin-bleaching to ‘body modification’ and insisted that it wasn’t that much different from wearing hair extensions and weaves. Azealia asked: “What’s the difference between getting a nose job and changing your skin colour?”
From calling out Beyoncé for “perpetuating that sad black female sufferance” with her music, she was also heavily criticised for her ‘racist’ rant at Zayn Malik on Twitter after calling him a “curry scented b****”. She later apologised.
But, Azealia does not “understand” the different between skin bleaching and other types of grooming, like getting your nose or hair done. “Nobody was upset when I was wearing 30-inch weaves and tearing out my edges and doing all that type of s*** like that. You guys loved it,” she said.
It didn’t take long before she was branded a hypocrite in light of her past statements. One outraged fan wrote: “Getting a weave and bleaching ur skin are 2 totally different things how dare she (sic).” Another wrote: “I can’t wit her. She needs help. She is a hypocrite! There is a difference between weave and bleaching (sic).”
She blasted anyone who questioned her past views in light of the skin bleaching as “just stupid”. “I don’t really think it’s important to discuss the cultural significance of skin bleaching anymore, because just as African-American people in this world, or Black people, you assimilate,” she said.
“There are things that you accept not out of necessity, but things that become the norm because it’s just happening all of the time.”
