Two Namibian musicians The Dogg, real name Martin Morocky, and Colleen Tjikune, who is better known as Chikune have been nominated for the AFRIMMA Awards 2016 which will be held in Texas, USA.
AFRIMMA is the only award ceremony in the diaspora that caters for all musical genres, including but not limited to Afrobeats, assiko, bongo, decale, funana, genge, highlife, hiplife, kwaito, lingala and soukous.
The awards started in 2014 and this will be the third time that The Dogg gets an AFRIMMA nomination. Others nominees in the Best Male Southern Africa category are Dj Bongz – South Africa, Emtee – South Africa, AKA – South Africa, Cassper Nyovest – South Africa, Vee Mampeezy – Botswana, Roberto – Zambia and Black Coffee – South Africa.
Chikune who is a first time nominee at the awards is nominated in Best Female Southern Africa category and will be competing against some of Africa’s biggest names like Lira (South Africa), Ice Queen Cleo (Zambia), Lizha James (Mozambique), Busiswa (South Africa), Nnunu Bomolemo Ramogotsi (Botswana), Pah Chihera (Zimbabwe) and Zonke (South Africa).
Chikune began her musical career by entering various musical competitions in 2012, aged 20.
At the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, she scooped the world title for senior vocalist. Her music career officially started in 2014, before her big break came when she was signed up by the Ogopa-Butterfly label. She won as the Female Artist of the Year at this year’s NAMAs.
The Dogg is a Namibian multi-award winner and entrepreneur.
