The Pupkewitz Foundation yesterday donated 200 bicycles to the government’s health extension worker programme that aims to deliver primary healthcare to communities situated far from health facilities. They also promote health-enhancing behaviour among families and raise awareness related to the prevention, promotion, treatment and rehabilitation of common health conditions. Close to 1 660 health extension workers have been deployed in all 14 regions of the country. A group of 582 health workers is currently undergoing training. The bicycles are to be used to alleviate transport challenges in identified areas, where long distances make it difficult for the health extension workers to reach people in need. Here Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services Juliet Kavetuna (left), Merryl Berry and Marcus Betts of Unicef show some of the cycles.
