Destitute young men from Olumpelengwa village are appealing to good Samaritans to assist them with sports equipment.

The group of enthusiastic athletes are in dire need of playing gear to participate in the five-day annual Dr Libertina Amadhila Floating Trophy Tourney for marginalised people, slated for next month during the festive season.

Olumpelengwa is a small village in Okahao constituency in the Omusati region. This year’s tourney will be staged at Otjomuru settlement, in Epupa constituency, Kunene region.

The popular football tourney kicks off on the1st of next month and is expected to attract a large crowd.

Development planner at the office of the Vice-President Directorate of Marginalised Communities in the Omusati region, Senia Endjala, said these young men are determined to take part in sports activities but urgently need proper sports equipment such as balls and playing gear if they were to compete on equal footing against their counterparts.

Endjala added that sport is likely to encourage young people to refrain from engaging in illicit activities.

“It’s in light of this that I would therefore urge the public to assist this marginalised sports team with playing gear.

“Otjomuru is a dangerously rocky terrain obliging these aspiring footballers to play with boots.”

She said the Olumpelengwa team was established two months ago but the team is keen to make its presence felt when they make their maiden assault on the tourney.

Several team members who spoke to New Era Sport expressed appreciation for the development planner as such practice convinced and encourage them to participate despite the hiccup of not having proper playing gear.

The enthusiastic players say even if they don’t get assistance before the tourney commences, they will make sure they bring something home.

A total of 20 young boys have shown vast interest in the formation of the football from Olumpelengwa. The annual floating trophy tourney, which caters only for the marginalised communities, was established in 2013 with the inaugural edition held at farm Uitkomomst in the Otjozondjupa region.

Ondelela farm in Otjikoto region hosted the competition last year .
