Information on why the Windhoek Draught live music festival, featuring American sensational RnB and Urban Soul singer R Kelly, was cancelled is still sketchy, and organisers are finding it hard to trace all the information on this, according to official promoter, Suleimen “Sula” Kyababa of Namconcerts.
Speaking to New Era Weekend, Sula said they are also waiting for answers from the R Kelly management on why they called off the event.
The concert was slated for Friday, 25 November at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek and was re-scheduled after Namconcerts was notified by the R Kelly management that they are experiencing internal challenges.Namconcerts is still in negotiations with the R. Kelly management and a full statement will be released once discussions have been done.
New Era Weekend understands that the American singer has so many shows lined from November, followed by his Buffet Tour – which he announced in March this year. The tour ended on November 13 in Washington DC. He is also expected to present his own show, Holiday Jam in North America this Sunday. From the first week of December, R Kelly is also schedule to promote his new album titled ‘12 Nights of Christmas’ until February next year at different occasions. According to the General Manager of External Relations for Ohlthaver & List Group, Roux-Che Locke, the interest from both local and international fans of R Kelly, who wanted to see him live on stage, has been overwhelming for the past weeks.
Locke also declined to comment on how much R Kelly was paid to come to Namibia, saying it was confidential information. “The sponsors reserve the right not to divulge any information concerning the artiste’s fee and/or requests,” she said. She added that all ticket sales have been put on hold until further notice.
